Caught in a rut.

On our North Coast 500 trip during the summer we hoped we would have the opportunity to photograph some Red Deer – and we were very lucky to see a small herd completely by accident (after thinking they were funny looking highland cattle).
Eager for more and closer to home, just 40 mins down the M6, we decided to visit the National Trust’s Tatton Park – a parkland full of wildlife and in particularly Red Deer. We waited until ‘rutting’ season and visited on a damp and grey autumn Saturday.  It cost just £6 for the car park which gave us access to 1000 acres of parkland full of deer.

We had seen deer close to the road as we drove in so set off to see them and hopefully get some good pics. The woodland was beautiful - the colours on the trees this year are spectacular. Sadly, as it was a little damp, the leaves on the ground were all a bit limp and definitely no ‘autumn’ crunch going on.

Although we didn’t see any ‘rutting’ it was well worth the visit – we spent quite some time observing two herds and the stags waiting around the edges for their chance to mate. We also stumbled into one stag which was completely camouflaged in very long grass watching the herd some distance away. You are warned at all times to stay a safe distance from the testosterone charged stags but how far is that? It is very unsettling to be fixed in the gaze of a large antlered stag! We discussed at length with a fellow photographer what we would actually do should one charge! The general consensus was to climb the nearest tree. In 50 years I’ve never been able to climb a tree so that would have been an adventure by itself!
We walked for over 4 hours and probably didn’t see half of the park. At one point, we had completely lost our bearings and had to ask for directions from an equally lost couple. Luckily we had come in opposite directions so were able to advise each other on a route back to civilisation (and toilets!). It was an extremely good value day out – the courtyard area contained several small quality shops and cafes and there was a food and gift fair on. Currently Tatton have a Roald Dahl event on and as you walk around the park you bump into characters and objects from the book including the BFG and the great glass elevator. We would definitely recommend a visit – there is lots to do for everyone from walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, families and those who just want afternoon tea or an ice cream in nice surroundings. We will definitely return.  It’s just a shame the park doesn’t allow early morning access for wildlife enthusiasts – we would love to be able to visit on a misty morning!

A bit of a quiet one.....

So we've had a few busy weekends in the last month and also a few quieter ones too. That tends to be the pattern doesn't it? Mad busy or nice and quiet. Whichever way it's a nice mix.

We do try and get a good walk in every weekend - whatever we are doing - and usually take our cameras too.

As Autumn is well and truly with us theres some great sights and colours now and living where we do on the outskirts of Wigan we aren't too far away from some great countryside.
We've started a new album on our Flickr page with some of our favourite photos from our ambles and rambles around Standish so if you like these and want to see some more then click here - Walks album.

This weekend we're also trying out a nice little gizmo that will help with getting us into the world of video and some funky stuff with our mobile phones - long exposures etc. Our first go at this is on our YouTube channel and we've shared it below. It's Viv making our lunch - pea and ham soup  - 3 and half minutes of work crammed into 12 seconds - high speed soup! It did take longer to eat. Hopefully we'll get some more chances to do similar stuff and get a little more experimental too over the coming weeks.
