Life and other stuff

From all of us to all of you...

The Christmas season always starts early here – (usually the previous Boxing Day when we get our next year’s cards in the sale) – Mid December is Chris’ birthday and usually starts our Christmas fun! 2017 was no exception with a packed weekend of planned birthday fun followed by our usual quiet family time at Christmas. This year brought the added bonus of a family cold being passed around and lucky old me started with it the day before Chris’ birthday weekend. Determined not to stop the celebrations, I sniffed my way through a delicious meal at Randall and Aubins. We were first time visitors and will definitely return. Lovely food and surroundings but we were most impressed with the knowledge and integrity of the staff with our waitress suggesting we skipped our starter as she felt it would spoil our enjoyment of our main. The meal was exquisite and we watched in fascination as table after table enjoyed champagne and oysters (we are wimps - what can I say!). There was even a champagne and caviar bar – just ring a bell to get your serving!

We followed our meal (with a few paracetamols and some fresh tissues…) with a trip to the Bridgwater Hall to enjoy the Halle orchestra and their amazing choirs. The smartly dressed red shirted children’s choir were a joy to watch and listen to. By this stage of the day my cold had descended into one of those where eyes and everything were watering. Sincere apologies to the audience members sat close. We’d skipped buying a programme for the concert not realising the words to the sing a long parts were in it! Neither of us realised how little of the words we knew to some very famous carols! Cue lots of miming.  Next stop was check in at our favourite hotel, Innside, and our plans for the evening involved food at the markets and drinks wherever! Sadly, I was now feeling pretty rough and Chris’ Birthday treat was me asleep from 7pm and the Strictly final for him! Sorry! Being up on the 10th floor of Innside meant he had some amazing views to keep him busy.
The next day we had a lovely family lunch at the always delicious Ashfield House and the weekend ended with a family trip to see the new Star Wars. Sadly, I missed that too! Gutted. Still haven’t seen it so no spoilers please.

Thankfully Christmas saw us all in good health and, after our traditional three generational (and dog) baking session we enjoyed a lovely few days all together eating, drinking, playing xylophones and throwing snowballs at silly hats. Oh, and Christmas Eve I bought all our Christmas cards for 2018!
Merry Christmas everyone.

another year over...

2017 started for us on the 19th floor of the Hilton Hotel in Manchester – lazily watching the fireworks in our PJs drinking champagne and eating sausage rolls. As it reaches its last hours I’m sure we’re not unusual in looking back on a year which has had extremes of sadness, worry, great excitement but above all gratitude that we’re still here and still have each other.
The face you show the world through blogs and Instagram posts probably doesn’t fully reflect the life you are actually living – as photographers we choose to show what we consider our best work and isn’t a blog the same?
Our year has probably been much the same as most other people’s bobbing along in the ‘we’re ok’ middle road of life with occasional rapid descents to extreme happiness and the times when you fall of the cliff and plunge into sadness and despair. The constant negativity from the ‘media’ adds to personal worries and sometimes makes life unbearable for many people – fake news, scare stories - it feels like we are living in a rapidly darkening cloud. Is it possible to find that spark of positivity?
Social media comes in for much criticism, and rightly so at times, but what we have personally experienced in the Instagram community has opened our eyes to the friendship, encouragement and positivity that exists in this world. In amongst our 2000 plus followers we are blessed to have new found digital friends from around the world supporting and encouraging us with our burgeoning photography hobby. Friends who live close, but we have never met- friends in other countries living culturally different lives to us – friends who make us laugh and friends offering positive comments and great support. Fellow Instagrammers who inspire us to try different photography techniques and even experiment with food. Thanks to @grandad1912 we now make the best roast potatoes (the secret's in the polenta - sshhhh!) and Cleveland's @princess_wendyk inspired us to produce our very first calendar! We are anxiously awaiting her thoughts on it - as well as anxiously trusting our postal service...
We don’t choose our photographs to count the likes we receive – our gallery is a record of our photographic journey and something for us to look at on our darker days. We try to show the best parts of our little corner of the world and celebrate the North West of England and beyond.
So, as we say goodbye to 2017, here is a big thank you to everyone in our new little community and here’s to 2018. (And - just for all the people who constantly ask – yes, the photos are definitely ours and not just Chris’)

We will remember them...

The Trooping of the Colour was such an outstanding day out, we decided to take a trip to London to see the Remembrance parade at first hand. This turned into a real holiday of two halves and some parts will definitely not be repeated!
The trip down was hot and uncomfortable on a very busy Virgin Train. Someone sat in our pre-booked seats, First Class ran out of food and water and one of us, for the first time ever in over fifty years, actually felt travel sick! Still, ever reliable Premier Inn gave us a comfy bed for the night and a good breakfast.
The following morning, time to take the cameras out for a London photo shoot. As a favour to a close friend, we had agreed to call at Harrods for one of their 2017 baubles. Little did we realise what a nightmare this would be! Christmas land was on the top floor and hard to find, packed full of people and products and then, once we had successfully purchased afore mentioned bauble, we couldn’t find the exit – anywhere. Cue 25 minutes of wandering round Harrods trying to escape in very hot conditions all wrapped up as it’s cold outside. Not pleasant. We escaped onto the streets to crowds of pre-Christmas shoppers and busy traffic. This set the pattern for the whole day, which was finished off very badly in a restaurant (which shall remain nameless) leaving us sat without service at our table for over 30 minutes and then very ungraciously serving us after a gentle (!) reminder from Chris. Still saved us having to tip. So, Saturday night, I lie awake wondering why we had bothered spending money on this.
Being positive people, we woke the next morning fresh and relaxed and determined to enjoy the Remembrance Sunday experience.  We decided to have an early start visiting Wellington Barracks, where we were lucky to be in time to see the troops massing in readiness. Course we managed to pick the wrong gate to wait for them to leave, but after a quick run down the road, we both managed to get great positions to capture the soldiers leaving the barracks. The day just got better and better - we watched the gun salute at Horse Guards Parade, experienced the two minute silence and bugle Last Post and then joined the crowds to cheer on the parade of veterans. It was a freezing cold day and we both have nothing but admiration for the people who took part in the parade, who must have been stood in the cold for over 3 hours. We saw at close quarters the Kings Troop Artillery, several Victoria Cross holders and line upon line of proud marching veterans. It was both humbling and patriotic and many a group marching proudly back to Horse Guards bought a tear to our eyes. We will definitely repeat some parts of this trip but I doubt you’ll see us with the famous green and gold bag again anytime soon!

Trooping the Colour...

One highlight of our 2017, was a last minute invite from Vicky at the North West Reserve Forces and Cadets, to attend this year’s Trooping of the Colour as their guests. Vicky works tirelessly to encourage businesses and organisations to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and support the crucial work our reservists, and their employers, undertake.
Despite the problems a last minute invite to an event with a strict dress code entails, when your wardrobe is mostly populated with Fat Face, Joe Browns and White Stuff jeans and jumpers, we didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation – a once in a lifetime experience.
Neither of us had ever imagined we would ever attend such a prestigious event, be metres away from the Queen and Prince Phillip, sit in glorious hot (very, very hot!) sunshine and witness the best of the UK’s Pomp and ceremony at first hand.
Chris took all the photographs that day and what a gallery it produced. Why not come and have a look at his work by clicking here?
After the ceremony, we were treated to a balcony view of the aerial flypast and a champagne lunch at the East India Club. Our companions for the day were friendly and fun and the walk back to the train included gin den stopovers with our new found friends!
Thanks to Vicky and the NWRFCA for an amazing day out. Why not go and see what the Armed Forces Covenant is all about?

The most wonderful time of the year

Visiting Manchester's Christmas Market has been an established family tradition now for well over 18 years. We visited the first ever market back in 1998 when the stalls just about filled the space in front of the town hall and Santa climbed the clock tower. Jump forward to 2017 and after years of expansion the market now stretches from the town hall to the cathedral with large pockets of stalls around the city.

You can buy everything from hats to candles, reindeer skins to cheeses (lots of cheese!) and this year, for the first time, Yorkshire pudding wraps containing almost a full roast dinner and a stall selling hot cookie dough and cream! Our particular favourites are the filled Italian cannoli and the spiced cashew nuts! Delicious! There is plenty to drink from hot chocolate to mulled wines and my favourite the hot spiced cider.

Photographing the market is quite a challenge - large crowds of people, confined spaces and how to get an image that hasn’t been captured by hundreds of other talented photographers.

Our attempt for some photographic individuality involved an early Sunday morning start and in my imagination, a crisp clear sunny morning which in reality turned out to be a cold, dark and very wet visit. The legendary Manchester rain turned out to be photographic gold with city pavements full of reflections.

So here’s our rainy day album of Manchester waking up and preparing for the last full weekend of the 2017 Christmas markets.
